Mississippi Symphony Orchestra - BRAVO IV Jazz Redifined

The incredible impact of Black culture on the nation’s and the world’s music is presented in Grammy Award-winning New Orleans jazz trumpeter and composer Nicholas Payton’s Black American Symphony, which traces the story of Black American music from its roots to modern day. MSO pairs this with one of the earliest efforts to fold Black melody into the classical realm — Dvorak’s visionary and popular New World Symphony

Black American Symphony (2012) (Payton)
Symphony No 9 in E minor, Op 95, “From the New World” (1893) (Dvorák)

Pre-concert lecture with a fascinating look at the evening’s music led by Dr. Timothy Coker, Professor Emeritus of Music at Millsaps College, at 6:30PM on the Mezzanine.

Whether Gunhild is singing favorite swinging jazz standards, playing one of many instruments (trumpet, trombone, harmonica, oboe, harp, flute, recorder, or jazz bagpipe!) or juggling and tap dancing, her sublime showmanship will shine. And just wait for the finale — spoiler alert — she plays three trumpets at once!

Andrew has produced music for several films including 11 songs for the Aaron Sorkin biopic, “Being the Ricardos” including, the “I Love Lucy” theme song and “Babalu.” For two years, Andrew was the headline singer and bandleader at the world-famous Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center. The Discovery Series, with major underwriting from the Caddo Parish
School Board and the Community Foundation of North Louisiana, is an
area-wide educational program serving 4th and 5th grade students (others may certainly attend) throughout Caddo and Bossier Parishes. Students attend Discovery Concerts at the Riverview Theater where they watch and listen as Kermit Poling, the Symphony’s assistant conductor, leads the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra through a program specifically designed to teach one or more aspects of music.

The theme of the Discovery Concert this year is Musical Storytelling. Concert repertoire will highlight the new score by Kermit Poling for large orchestra  Bill Joyce’s “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs,” as well as more hits from the orchestra, and a very special performance by the charismatic and virtuosic double bass soloist Xavier Foley. Winner of a prestigious 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he was recently recognized on New York WQXR’s “19 for 19” Artists to Watch list, and featured on PBS Thirteen’s NYC-ARTs.

This project is supported by a grant from the Community Foundation and funding from Caddo Parish Schools, so the Discovery Concerts are free of charge to all public school students, and a suggested donation of $5 per person for private and homeschool groups. Schools are responsible for transportation.
